“I wear my heart on my sleeve.”

Hunter Atagi is a summer intern and our ʻĀina Warrior of the week.  He has a commanding presence but admits, “I wear my heart on my sleeve.  I look big and mean but once you get to know me, I’m a nice person.”  As a student at Farrington High School, Hunter would often visit Hoʻoulu ʻĀina with his Hawaiian Studies class to work on the land.  He always felt connected to this place but even more so since his mom also works for KKV.  “Yah, it’s in my bloodline,” he grins.  Hunter has great aspirations as he enters Pacific University, Oregon in the fall.  His plan is to receive a dual degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Applied Science and Physics.  His overall goal is to work for NASA some day.  Although he thinks about climate change and its impact on the islands, he also thinks about the culture of the community.  “I hope that (100 years from now) Hawaiʻi’s people are still the same – respectful and down to earth.”
